Big Line-up of Boring Games

Saturday is a huge line up of games on Saturday with 17 of 25 ranked teams in action. But after looking through all the games, I don’t really find any that interesting. They’re mostly games with big talent difference and the more talented team is usually at home. This looks like it should be called One Sided Saturday. However I’m sure as I look closer some games will intrigue me.

NCAA Game of the Day

8 Marquette vs 23 Georgetown

Marquette has been playing very well. They’re first place in the conference and just beat Notre Dame in their house. Georgetown is the most inconsistant team in the country and coming off four straight losses, including losses to Seton Hall and Cincinnatti. Marquette is undefeated in the Big East while Georgetowns tournament hopes are slipping. I don’t know why, but I’m picking Georgetown. This schedule of games just seems like a lot of no brainers. I just have a feeling something surprising will happen. This is what I’m going with. The best game of the day in terms of the level of teams involved is easily Louisville and West Virginia. Louisville has been rolling. Should be fun to watch.

23 Georgetown 72 vs 8 Marquette 69 *(Marquette 94 vs Georgetown 82)*

Record 13 – 3

Redemption Thursday

All right so I didn’t do that well yesterday, only going 5 for 8. I still think Duke is better than Wake Forest. They shot 33% and only lost by two on the road. I definitely still think Pitt is better than Nova. All Pittsburghs problems happened when DeJuan Blair got in foul trouble, he doesn’t normally. I don’t know what to say about Georgetown, they’re a talented team but impossible to predict. There are a lot of good games today. Hopefully I can redeem myself a little.

NCAA Game of the Day

18 St Marys vs 25 Gonzaga

Gonzaga is one of the most talented teams in the country but they have been inconsistant this season. St Marys is lead by fast point guard Patty Mills. He’s a quick one but I think he’s overrated. St Marys success is a lot more due to their big men. Gonzaga has been flying under the radar all season. With this being a home game I think this is the time Gonzaga gets back on the map.

25 Gonzaga 75 vs 18 Saint Marys 67 (Gonzaga 69 vs Saint Marys 62)

Other Predictions…

Virginia Tech 73 vs 11 Clemson 70 *(Clemson 86 vs Virginia Tech 82)*

9 Michigan State 66 vs Iowa 60 (Michigan State 71 vs Iowa 56)

14 Arizona State 57 vs Washington State 45 *(Washington State 65 vs Arizona State 55)*

16 UCLA 75 vs California 68 (UCLA 81 vs California 66)

Wake vs Duke Wednesday

Easily the main game of the day with eleven top 25 teams playing eachother. Both are top four teams looking for a one seed come tournament time. Wake is coming off a loss to Virginia Tech, Duke coming off a thrashing of MD.

Last year Duke was coming off a win against Maryland and followed it up with a loss to Wake. I don’t see the same thing happening this year. I think this is the best Duke team since they won the championship in the early century. Also I think Wake is a little overrated. I just don’t see them beating Duke. It will be close however because Wake is at home.

1 Duke 75 vs 4 Wake 71 *(Wake Forest 70 vs Duke 68 )*

Duke shoots 33% and only loses by two, I still think Duke is the better team.

Other Predictions:

7 Louisville 73 vs South Florida 54 (Louisville 80 vs South Florida 54)

19 Memphis 77 vs East Carolina 58 (Memphis 85 vs East Carolina 64)

3 Pittsburgh 68 vs 21 Villanova 64 *(Villanova 67 vs Pittsburgh 57)*

10 Xavier 77 vs Charlotte 55 (Xavier 69 vs Charlotte 47)

22 Georgetown 73 vs Cincinnati 65 *(Cincinnati 65 vs Georgetown 57)*

6 North Carolina 80 vs Florida State 70 (North Carolina 80 vs NC State 77)

2 Connecticut 77 vs DePaul 62 (Connecticut 71 vs DePaul 49)

Big East Sunday

Big games in the Big East on Sunday with four top 25 teams in the conference playing. This is probably the most competitive conference in the country, so every game is important.

4 Pittsburgh vs West Virginia

This game has a lot of intrigue to it. The game is being broadcast on ESPN Fullcourt and ESPN 360 at 4:00 PM ET. Which brings me to my first point, do either of these channels even exist? I don’t know of any proud ESPN Full Court owners.  And if so, why? It must be because ESPN can’t possibly find a way to fit a great game like this onto one of their main channels. As we all know the PBA Tour always takes precendent on Sundays.  Anyways…

This game is a complete toss up to me. Pitt is the better team but WV is at home. Both are coming off impressive wins. Both are scrappy teams that play strong D and rebound tremendously well. In the end Pitt has the best player on the floor in DeJuan Blair so I’m going to go with them on this one.

4 Pittsburgh defeats West Virginia 68 to 65 in a battle

(Pittsburgh 79 vs West Virginia 67)

Other Predictions…

7 Michigan State defeats Ohio State 65 to 60 (Michigan State 78 vs Ohio State 67)

12 Louisville defeats 8 Syracuse 75 to 67  (Louisville 67 vs Syracuse 57)

9 Clemson defeats Georgia Tech 81 to 66 (Clemson 73 vs Georgia Tech 59)

14 Georgetown defeats Seton Hall 73 to 62 *(Seton Hall 65 vs Georgetown 60)*

Rivalry Saturday in College Basketball

Conference play has begun and has started to heat up now in 2009. Conference play brings intense rivalrys and big matchups. This Saturday is stacked with big games in every conference, all day long.

1 Duke vs Maryland

Duke and Marylands rivalry is one of the biggest in college basketball, reaching its height in the Jay Williams and Juan Dixons years in the early part of this millenium. Sadly, my Terps don’t have much of a chance in their first meeting with the Dookies this year. The game is at Dukes Cameron Indoor Stadium, where Duke has yet to lose this year. Maryland is 2 and 4 on the road/neutral sight this year. Duke has been on a roll all season and are 5-0 in their last five games including a win over the Georgetown Hoyas. The Terps are 2-3 in their last five including a loss to MORGAN STATE at HOME. That’s definitely not good.

Maryland can’t shoot from deep and can’t score inside, due to lack of any effective post player. Duke is third in the nation in defensive efficiency. This matchup does not shape up well at all for my Terps.  On the brighter side of things it can’t be any worse than the beating my Wizards took Thursday night against the Lakers.

Score Prediction:  74 – 56 Duke wins handily

UPDATE: I guess I was wrong, it can be worse…much, much worse. (Duke 85 vs Maryland 44)

24 Memphis vs Tennessee

Another big rivalry coming from the state of Tennessee. Both teams have had a lot of success in recent years and haven’t quite played up to that level yet this season.

Memphis can’t shoot but they play stout defense. They’re 2nd ranked nationally in defensive effeciency.  They’ve played a lot better recently after moving freshman Tyreke Evans to pointguard.

Tennessee has underachieved so far this year but they’ve played the 2nd hardest schedule in the country. They have home court advantage in this one and against Memphis I’m sure it will be loud. While they have a good offense, their defense is notably bad.

This is a big in-state rivalry so I’m sure both teams will come to play. Tennessee is at home but I think Memphis is the better team.

Score Prediction:  80 – 75 Memphis in a close one (Real close, Memphis 54 vs Tennessee 52)
